@pamasaur @x0pherl Thank you for this! Last year was my first foray into formalized mentoring. I wrote a bit about the reasoning when I opened applications last year (aaron-gustafson.com/notebook/looking-for-a-mentor/). You are bang-on with all of your observations, but I will add one more…

@pamasaur @x0pherl As @zeldman noted yesterday, mentors get a lot out of the relationship too. I learned from @mmatuzo and @amberleyjohanna and grew with them too. When everyone involved is committed and personalities are a good match, mentorship is a win-win.

@pamasaur @x0pherl @zeldman @mmatuzo @amberleyjohanna Last year I want sure what I was getting myself into, hence the time-boxing, but looking back I really think having a defined mentorship period was good. It helped us establish a set of goals that we felt were attainable during that time.

@pamasaur @x0pherl @zeldman @mmatuzo @amberleyjohanna I expect (it maybe hope) I will continue to be involved in my mentees careers, but having a defined end also enables me to make room to help more people.

@pamasaur @x0pherl @zeldman @mmatuzo @amberleyjohanna I’ve benefited from the mentorship and career advice of dozens of folks over the years: @zeldman @mholzschlag @meyerweb @adactio @feather @kissane @kristastevens @codepo8 @reybango @veen @teleject @cwilso @jenville … the list goes on and on. I owe it to them to pay it forward.
